November 3 2022 - One Health Day! One Planet, One Health.

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted how extremely vulnerable the world is when unforeseen infectious disease events occur. As the majority of emerging infectious diseases originate in animals, we have to think ánd act from  a multi-disciplinary One Health approach and recognize that the health of people is closely connected to the health of animals and our shared environment.

The Netherlands is particularly vulnerable to outbreaks of viral diseases transmitted by mosquitoes due to its water-dominated landscape, high population density, and large amount of livestock and wildlife. An ideal situation for virus circulation and cross-species transmission if and when exotic mosquito species are introduced.

The One Health PACT project is a research collaboration of experts from a wide diversity of fields relevant for infectious disease outbreaks, ranging from ecological and climate modelling to entomology, virology and public health. Together we take a proactive approach in the preparation for early detection and prevention of future outbreaks of mosquito-borne diseases in the Netherlands.
