Interview with Marion Koopmans in BNR: Tiger mosquito here to stay in our country, ‘it was only a matter of time’

Prof. Marion Koopmans, Head of the Department of Viroscience and Scienctific Director Emerging Infectious Diseases of the Netherlands Centre for One Health, is coordinator of the Research project One Health PACT.

In a recent interview on BNR, Prof. Dr. Marion Koopmans (One Health PACT PI) warned that the tiger mosquito is likely to become a permanent presence in the Netherlands.

There is a high chance that the tiger mosquito will become permanently established in our country within five years. Caretaker Minister of Public Health Jan Anthonie Bruijn (VVD) warned of this in a letter to the House of Representatives. This also increases the risk of outbreaks of (tropical) infectious diseases such as dengue fever and chikungunya. “We have seen this coming for quite some time; it simply has to do with climate change,” says Marion Koopmans, professor of virology at Erasmus University.
