One Health PACT / Avans – Lab-student: Lois Hovenier

Who am I?

My name is Lois Hovenier, and I am 19 years old. I am a third-year student studying Biomedical Research at Avans Hogeschool ATGM at Breda. Currently, I am following the specialization Patient-oriented Research.

What subject will I be focussing on this semester? What will I be researching?

The project I am working on right now focuses on the surveillance of Arboviruses. My partner (Bart Geluk) and I will create a fieldable technique to detect Arbovirusses in wildlife samples using Recombinase Polymerase Amplification (RPA).

What do I want to do with this in the future?

My goal is to expand my knowledge about viruses and to see where my interests lie. I am very interested in combining public health and molecular research, so this project is a good start for me. After this, I would love to work on more projects in this direction.

What would I like to learn?

I would like to have a better understanding of Arboviruses and their effect on our lives nowadays. It is a crucial case that will still be with us in the future. That is why I am glad to participate in this project and focus on the importance of public health.
