Species


Human

Research directed to human health, public health.

6. Chiara de Bellegarde: I will be investigating travel-related arbovirus infections and explore seropositivity for vector-borne diseases in humans in order to allow early detection and targeted surveillance.


7. Ayat Abourashed: I will work on health education and promotion with students to raise awareness for arboviruses and virus prevention and preparedness.


9. Mariken de Wit: Will be included as a potential host in all models.


10. Afonso Dimas Martins: Humans will have a small, yet relevant, role in these models, as they act as accidental dead-end hosts for the viruses in study.


17. Imke Visser: All the in vivo and in vitro work will be mostly directed to human health, therefore mostly primary human tissue (in vitro, ex vivo) and a mouse model (in vivo) will be used.


18. Eleanor Marshall: We are most interested in the ability of a virus to induce neurological disease in humans, therefore we will use primary human tissue as much as possible.


19. Tessa Nelemans: Ex vivo skin model will be human derived.


20. Muriel Aguilar Bretones: In my project I will mainly focus on the clinical impact of humoral immunity in humans.


25. Jo Duyvestyn: Vaccine development, innate immune evasion information.


21. Pauline de Best: My research is directed at public (human) health.


26. Joyce van Bree: Using human protein lysate to see which human proteins bind CpG/UpA dinucleotides.

Bird

Research directed to (dead and alive) wild and captive birds.

2. Nnomzie Atama: Will be trapping birds and collecting dead birds for testing


3. Tjomme van Mastrigt: Several migratory bird species will be targeted to quantify variation in immunological status throughout the annual cycle.


4. Jurrian van Irsel: I will focus my research on dead and alive birds over a wide range of wild European bird species. I will include field work on at least Common blackbird nestlings.


5. Marianne Rijtma: I will use data on bird density and distribution in my WNV risk map.


9. Mariken de Wit: Will be included as a potential host when it is part of a particular transmission cycle.


10. Afonso Dimas Martins: Birds will act as amplifying hosts and most important reservoirs of these VBDs.


16. Gianfilippo Agliani: I will perform experimental infection in birds.


17. Imke Visser: Experimental infection in birds (collab. with Gianfillipo, UU).


18. Eleanor Marshall: Experimental infection in birds in collab. with Gianfillipo.


(27) Martha Dellar: Will look at how distributions are likely to change in the future.

Mosquito

Research on mosquito species and their role in arbovirus transmission, detection etc.

1. Rody Blom: I am studying mosquito ecology and activity patterns. I will use field sampling and citizen science to acquire more information on important biological characteristics such as species-specific host preferences and activity patterns.


4. Jurrian van Irsel: I will include some information on mosquitoes, but this will be focused on Culex pipiens and involves only minor inclusion. No field work involved concerning mosquitoes .


5. Marianne Rijtma: I will use data on mosquito density and distribution in my WNV risk map.


7. Ayat Abourashed: I will work on mosquito surveillance.


8. Kiki Streng: Mosquitoes will be captured at livestock barns (to determine their presence and abundance inside and outside barns).


9. Mariken de Wit: Will be included as a vector in all models.


10. Afonso Dimas Martins: Mosquitoes will be the main vector in our model.


13. Charlotte Linthout: I will use different mosquito species for vector competence studies: Culex pipiens pipiens; Culex pipiens molestus; Aedes japonicas; Aedes albopictus.


14/24. Jurgen Moonen: I will be studying only mosquito immunity.


14/24. Tom van der Most: The project looks at arboviral presence and naturally-infecting viruses in Dutch Culex pipiens and the Culex pipiens anti-viral immune response.


15. Sam Boerlijst: Experiments on species specific population dynamics.


17. Imke Visser: I will obtain mosquito saliva from different mosquito species to determine their role in arbovirus transmission to the vertebrate host.


21. Pauline de Best: Interventions will be targeted at mosquitoes, so while I do not directly use mosquitoes, this is a specie of interest within my project.


26. Joyce van Bree: Using mosquito protein lysate to see which human proteins bind CpG/UpA dinucleotides.


(27) Martha Dellar: Working with PhD12 to create mosquito model and will use this to see how mosquito populations are likely to change in the future.

Other arthropods

Research on other arthropods than mosquitoes (e.g. ticks, biting midges).

3. Tjomme van Mastrigt: Ticks will be scored and related to infection histories and disease-related mortality in wild bird populations using capture mark recapture data.


17. Imke Visser: As under ‘mosquito’, but then I might also include tick saliva in my project.

Domestic animal

Research on livestock, equines and pets.

8. Kiki Streng: Will be used in seroprevalence studies. Surveillance protocols for arboviruses in these animal species will be developed.


9. Mariken de Wit: Will be included as a potential host when it is part of a particular transmission cycle.


(27) Martha Dellar: Will look at how agriculture (and therefore livestock) will change in the future.

Wild mammal

Research on wild mammals (e.g. rodents, ruminants).

2. Nnomzie Atama: Wild mammals will be trapped for monitoring antibodies and antigen to VBD.


8. Kiki Streng: Will be used in seroprevalence studies. Surveillance protocols for arboviruses in these animal species (wild ruminants, equines and possibly zoo animals) will be developed.


9. Mariken de Wit: Will be included as a potential host when it is part of a particular transmission cycle.


(27) Martha Dellar: Will look at how wild mammal populations are likely to change in the future.
